How to Successfully Nurture Tropical Indoor Plants

There are many beautiful varieties of tropical indoor plant and all of them can add a touch of the exotic to your home. Nurturing a tropical indoor plant and watching it bloom and grow over time also provides a wonderful sense of achievement and satisfaction. Provided you give tropical indoor plants the attention they require there is no reason why they should not do very well inside your home. The key is to recreate the plant’s humid, warm and bright natural environment.

The Temperature

Tropical plants require a fluctuating temperature in order to do well. You should keep your home between 65 and 85 degrees at all times if you want your tropical indoor plant to thrive, but the temperature should not remain constant. Tropical indoor plants do best if you keep your house warmer during the day and cooler at night, since this replicates the temperature fluctuation of their natural environment. However, if you are not at home during the day you may wish to turn your heating down then instead. Be careful not to let the temperature of your home drop below sixty-five degrees if you want your plant to grow and flower.

Providing Light

Tropical indoor plants also need light in order to thrive. There are two ways of providing a plant with light. You can either position them close to one of the windows in your home or buy some plant lights. If you purchase plant lights remember to turn them off at night if you wish to simulate a natural environment. It is also a good idea to research your particular species of plant in order to determine exactly how much light it requires. Some plants do best in direct sunlight while others are better suited to partial shade.

Water And Humidity

The natural environment of a tropical indoor plant is very humid and there are two ways of making sure the leaves remain moist. You should periodically spray the leaves of your plant with a spray gun in order to keep them hydrated. During the winter months you may even wish to turn on a humidifier to stop the air in your home becoming excessively dry.

Tropical indoor plants generally require quite a lot of water; though much depends on what species your plant happens to be. In order to determine how much water to give your plant you can use gardening books or the internet to do some research. Remember that the more knowledge you have about your tropical indoor plants the more likely it is that you can make them grow and bloom healthily.
