Tips to Follow for an Organic Garden

Organic gardening has become very popular today. Organic gardeners understand the harm that chemicals can cause to the environment and therefore avoid using them at all costs. When the soil is well nourished it does not require any added chemicals and this is what organic gardening mainly puts its focus on. When the soil has organic material, it becomes moist, airy and very fertile. These qualities are the most ideal for healthy plants regardless of the time of year. Earthworms and other organisms are also released in the soil when organic matter is used to ensure that they release the required bacteria to make the soil healthy. These organisms are also known to help the roots of plants grow deeper where they can reach water and nutrients further.

Since organic gardening does not involve the use of chemicals, it makes it very easy for gardeners to maintain their gardens because all they need is the sun, water and nutritious soil. Making the soil in a garden nutritious is very easy if the gardener knows how to make and use compost manure. Compost can be made in many ways even easily at home. This includes layering kitchen waste, leaves and other household waste that can decompose in a pit and leaving it there to turn into manure. The best type of compost is made when green and soft material is mixed with an almost equal amount of hard and brown material. Using covered bins that have openings at the bottom is very easy although they can also be put in a corner of the yard. This is important because the already decomposed waste can be removed from the bin and the rest left to continue decaying.

To ensure that the decaying waste starts off in the right direction, a bit of already decayed waste should be added. This process is also much faster than leaving the decomposition to nature alone. This already decayed waste is referred to as compost starter and can also be purchased in many gardening stores or the internet. Commercial compost starters have nutrients and enzymes that make the decaying process take a shorter time. This is mostly effective if the waste is hard and brown such as wood shavings and other wooden waste. Sprinkling the compost starter on the top layer enables the decomposition process to take off easily. Many people prefer using compost manure because it is cheaper and also ensures that the plants grown there do not have chemicals and are therefore safe to be eaten by children, adults and the elderly.
