English Garden Hedges: Maintenance and Care

English gardeners prefer a natural looking garden. This can be done by having many birds and animals create habitats in the garden by using a hedge as opposed to using a modern fence. Evergreen hedges maintain their green coloration the entire year because they absorb carbon dioxide, which helps them retain their foliage. In addition, garden hedges can be used for enhancing privacy without the need for putting up an extra fence. The main purpose of a garden is a natural look and having a hedge emphasizes on it more.

English garden hedges require maintenance by pruning and trimming to get a desired effect. Depending on the type of hedge, some of them shed their leaves during winter while others maintain them all year round. Other hedges are evergreen all year round while some other hedges have a different color for every season of the year because their leaves change color every season. Other garden hedges become thicker with time as they develop fruits and berries during the year, which develop into other hedges from the bottom.

People have different ideas for the type of hedge they want for their English gardens. Some hedges can be trimmed in the shape of boxes and provide a uniform and symmetrical fence. To maintain this type of hedge, more care and maintenance will have to be put in to ensure the hedge stays as it should. Hedging roses are also commonly preferred by English gardeners along with the most common, which are shrub hedges. Because the rose flowers come in different colors, they can add color to a garden and therefore make it ore beautiful. To ensure that the rose flowers server their visual purpose, they should not be grown very tall or above eye level.

Most gardens have the traditional and formal look although many English gardeners are now breaking the tradition by using plants with different colors on their hedges. These flowered hedges can be used simply for beauty and they can also be used as shields and screens to enhance privacy. Seasonal flowers are known to shoot up at the bottom of garden hedges and therefore some room should be left if one is planting the hedge near a concrete surface. English gardens can be created by mixing plants with different colored leaves and flowers to ensure that the garden gets the desired appeal.
