Glass Mulch

When people hear about mulch, they think of gardens and flowerbeds and growing plants and brushes and flowers. They also think of mulch that helps plants grow, like bark mulch, wood mulch, as well as non organic types of mulch that are used in farming, like plastic mulch.

Nevertheless there are other types of mulch that are used for other purpose, such as landscaping. Glass mulch is one of such types of mulch.

Glass much isn’t really used to make plants grow better or in farming. It is mostly used as decoration in landscaping. Glass mulch is mostly appreciated for its looks.

There is also another good side of glass mulch. It is environmentally friendly as it doesn’t pollute and it comes from recycles glass. In fact, some people create their own glass mulch by breaking old bottles or glassed that have been lying around for ages, or by saving their used wine or beer bottles. This method is the cheapest and the most environmentally friendly of all. Nevertheless, there are just two things to take into consideration. First of all, it looks much better if the bottles are of the same color. Bottles or glass from different colors can be used, but then a proper mix should be made to ensure a coherent color. This should be done with care and always using proper gloves, in order to avoid getting cut.

Which brings us to the second item. Self made glass mulch tends to have sharp edges, and therefore it is not very advised for gardens or places where there are children or pets that can get hurt. It is also not advised for paths that people may walk on without shoes. However, it is a very good option for decorating elsewhere. For example, blue glass mulch can be put around a fountain in order to give it a water effect, or along a wall, to give it the appearance of a small sparkly stream.

On the other hand, buying glass mulch from a store is a bit more expensive, but a safer choice. It usually has much less sharp edges because it is tumbled before being sold. Thus, it is a much better choice for paths. Nevertheless children should be taught not to play with the small pieces. Fortunately, since glass is odorless, animals and pets won’t try to eat it. Also, buying glass mulch will let you access to several colors and textures, and you won’t have to stay with only the colors of the recycled glass you have at home. You can also buy as much as you need or want, and not restrain yourself to the quantity you have at home. And finally, you will be saving yourself a lot of work.
