T12 T8 T5 Fluorescent Grow Lights - What's the Difference?

Fluorescent lights are very popular these days for indoor growers. They can be used for various parts of the growing process. Most people prefer to use them during the cloning and vegetative phases because the plants don't need quite as much light at this time of their growth. Fluorescent grow lights are also very popular for mother plants as well because they don't give off as much heat and help keep the plant shorter and stockier. There are several different types of fluorescent lights out there though, so how do you know which type to use for indoor growing?

What are the differences in tubular fluorescent bulbs? Size and efficiency. The letter 'T' indicates the shape of the bulb (tubular) and the number after the 'T' represents the diameter of the bulb in eighths of an inch (A T5 bulb is 5/8 inch). The T12 fluorescent bulb is the oldest and most common of the tubular bulbs. It is also the least efficient.

After this came the T8 fluorescent bulb which will fit the same fixture as the T12 but uses roughly 20% less wattage to produce the same amount of light. The newest fluorescent light is the T5 bulb which which will NOT work in T12 and T8 bulb fixtures because it is shorter and has a different pin arrangement. T5 bulbs offer even greater efficiency and also offer a high output version (HO) which produces about twice the amount of light as the standard T5 bulb.

You probably have a good idea of which type of fluorescent is best for indoor grow rooms at this point. The T5 grow light is every growers favorite fluorescent light bulb choice because of the higher output paired with the lower energy use. This new technology has helped growers achieve even better results than ever before.
