HPS Grow Lights And The Indoor Gardener

If you are an indoor gardener, your task in growing wonderful fruits, flowers and vegetables is to recreate as best as possible the natural conditions in which the plants would grow outside. All plants require water, food, and light in order to grow and mature. One of the key components in being successful with indoor gardening is having light that emulates natural sunlight. Although there are a variety of grow lights available for purchase, many indoor gardeners choose HPS grow lights in this situation.

HPS lights, also known as high pressure sodium, are often used in greenhouses and other indoor gardening environments because they enjoy a long productive life, and HPS lights are less expensive to run than other types of indoor HID grow lights. As you delve into indoor gardening, you will learn that plants need different types of light according to their maturity. For young plants that need to grow vegetation, indoor gardeners will select lights in the blue color spectrum, which promotes vegetative growth. They also work well for plants whose sole purpose is vegetative growth, such as lettuces. For mature plants that need to flower and set fruit, the indoor gardener will want to provide the plants with light in the red and orange color spectrum, which promotes these growth features. HPS grow lights fall into this latter category, making them especially suited for those indoor gardeners that are trying to get flowers, fruits and vegetables to mature.

HPS grow lights are a type of HID light, or high intensity discharge light, and favored by indoor gardeners because this type of HPS light imitates natural sunlight very well. Like all HID lights, HPS lighting requires that you use a ballast in conjunction with the HPS grow light. A ballast is a lighting component that helps to properly regulate the electrical current that runs through the HPS grow light, so that the HPS light gets enough electricity to light up properly, but not so much that the grow light explodes.

The inner workings of HPS lighting is also different and unique from other HID grow lights. Sodium gas is used inside the HPS light, and it is this that produces the red color-spectrum light. HPS grow lights also utilize an alumina arc tube, which is used for chemical control once the power runs through the bulb. All of these components work together to create the intense light that indoor gardeners need for viable plant production.
