Sego Palm

Question
I purchased and planted a sego palm about six years ago.  I live in Florida and it seems well-suited to the climate.  I am lacking any sort of green thumb.  I water occasionally in long droughts but I mostly leave it alone and it has thrived until recently.  I guess it has developed what is referred to as a second head.  The original portion of the plant still appears hardy, but the inner portion, which came up quick and TALL out of the center is severly yellowed and wilty.  We have been getting daily storms so it is definitely well hydrated.  I greatly appreciate any suggestions!  THANKS AND KEEP SMILING!!

Answer
Hey, Michelle.

What you seem to be describing, "severely yellowed and wilty," is normal. It is, you might say, reaching puberty. It might bloom, or it might divide, or it might simply put on a burst of growth. Only it knows for sure. Enjoy it; it seems to be enjoying where you planted it.

Hey, Michelle.

A quick follow-up. I went to the San Diego Zoo yesterday afternoon, which is also a world-class arboretum. Virtually all of the sago palms there were as you described yours; it's that time of year.

If you want to email a picture of yours to me at [email protected], I can tell you definitively what the condition of yours is.
