Floral piece.

Question
I would like to give my wife a floral centerpiece
of live cut flowers that can then be planted in my garden.
Please make suggestions.
Thank you.

Answer
Dear Morty

What a lovely idea. I am based in the U.K and here is what I would do here. I hope that you can access the same materials there.

I would use either a lined basket, quite large or a nice watertight ceramic bowl or similar. Put plenty of crocks in the bottom to help with drainage. I'd use a pot plant compost.

My plant selection would include this time of the year; an azalea (they do prefer ericaeous/acid soil when planted in the garden) a heather/Erica, which again would need an acid soil, Hydrangea's are good indoors when flowering but are quite a thirsty plant for a mixed display. Pot chrysanthemums are good planted out after, where they suddenly grow very tall (they are stunted with chemical to keep them short for the pot plant trade)  A little later on in the season you have the hyacinths and primroses which all thrive in the garden after.  Ivies, either trailing or trained upright, would be lovely in the display for the foliage element.

I really like all one type of plant together in a bowl, so I might be inclined to have all azaleas with a few ivies trailing over the side, they would be quite compatible and give a good display.

I hope this has been of some help.

Kindest regards

Sue
