curling leaves

Question
My grand daughter in LAS Vegas recently planted a lemon and a lime tree. The lime is doing well but the lemon leaves are curling...The trees are about two and a half feet tall and had fruit which they removed..She said they have been watering them daily.Any ideas?...Thanks Ken

Answer
Hi Ken, I suspect it's water related.  All the water available to a newly transplanted tree is in the existing rootball.  Your surrounding soil may be moist, but the old rootball dries very quickly on a hot day.  A drought stressed citrus will have curled leaves (a self defense mechanism to prevent further water loss) and tends to drop internal foliage.  Check the soil moisture near the trunk.  Citrus like full sun, ample moisture and lot's of fertilizer.  Jim
