Propagation of Canna Seeds

Question
Last fall I found a site that gave instructions for prop. of Cannas' in a mason jar. I lost all info including the bookmark. Are you familiar with this method? It also could be used for Daylilies! If you have the same method info please help me or direct me to a site with this info.
Thank you  Dee

Answer
Hi Dee,
Thanx for your question.  I am not familiar with the mason jar method for germinating canna seeds.  I have nicked canna seeds before and placed them in a Gerber baby food jar and the root comes out quickly.  To me, it's just as effective to plant the seed about 1 inch deep in warm soil and keep the pot sealed inside of a clear plastic baggie.  Keep it warm 75-80 degrees and germination occurs in 2 weeks or more.  It can be sporadic so count yoour seeds and keep track of all of the sprouts.  Once sprouted, the seedlings require a lot of light or they will grow themselves out and die.  I think it is best to prick them gently out of the pot when they are about 4 inches tall, plant in separate cells and feed a diluted (1/2 strenghth) fish emulsion every 2 weeks.  Move them to a cooler spot (65-70) and make sure they get plenty of light.  A 40-watt shoplight directly overhead about 8 inches should do.  Don't put the seedlings outdoors until after the last frost and soil is at least 60 degrees.  Put them in the shade first for 10 days and protect them from rain, wind, hail, etc.  I hope this helps.
Tom
