northern California

Question
I am moving to solano county california. I have been a gardening in maryland for 50 years. Can I grow tomatoes?  What time of year? Summers? All year if I water? Can I still buy from east coast gardens like White Flower Farms or only California nurseries?  Do you have any titles for me to read about this major change of mine? Thanks

Answer
Hi Jo Ann.  Thanx for your question.  First, I would contact the Master Gardeners of Solano County.

http://cesolano.ucdavis.edu/

They will be a wealth of information.  You can go through the Solano County Extension Service and they should have brochures and publications available regarding all kinds of agricultural and horticultural subjects from the University of California at Davis.

You'll have to check with White Flower Farm and your local extension service.  Most reputable mail order houses know what they can and can't ship to California and there are a lot of restrictions.

I think the website I posted above will be plenty to get you started.  I hope this helps.
Tom
