grape vine

Question
Ihave a beautiful grape vine that never produces any grapes. Is it because it is the only one or am i doing something wrong.the plant is about six years old.thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Jerry,
Thanx for your question.  There are a number of reasons that your plant may not be producing.  First of all, climate.  Many grape plants will grow all over the U.S and many parts of Canada but there may be climactic issues that will allow your plant to grow and flourish but not produce.  The key here is late frosts.  Late frosts will consistently kill back buds that would have produced fruit for the current season.  Many growers have bred grape plants that can live through these seasonal extremes so one finds grape producing areas in the Finger Lakes region of New York where winters can be harsh.  Make sure your grape vine is a variety that is rated for your area.  A lot of nurseries will sell plants (unfortunately) that are not really good for the area.  Your plant is 6 years old so it should be sufficiently mature for production.  Have you properly pruned the plant?  Grape vines require extensive and accurate pruning in order to properly produce fruit.  Drought, excessive cold or hot temperatures and low fertility will adversely affect grapes.  Additionally, too much nitrogen can cause all green growth and no fruit growth.  If your plants are close to lawns that are frequently fertilized, the runoff of high nitrogen lawn fertilizers could be causing this.  I'm really hnot an expert at grape cultivation.  I've never really had experience cultivating grapes.  I'm going to include a link for you to look at that discusses grape pruning.  I think that is probably where your big issue lies.  I know a little bit about berry pruning and that there are simlarities with their cultivation to that of grapes.  Grapes grow on current year growth which results from prior year buds.  There has to be sufficient light from the sun so the canopy of grape leaves has to be pruned and controlled.  I think this link will explain better.

I hope this helps.
