Pond filter

Question
Hi! I have a half wisky barrel pond. I want to install an external filter. I'm not sure which filter is best because the pond in 25 gallons. The reason why I need a filter is thant the birds usually wash in it and there droppings clog up the fountain pump and leaves and other debris get in it as well.

Thanks!

Answer
There are some internal filters but they do take up room so I understand wanting an external filter.  Have you considered another whiskey barrel next to your current pond?  They make whiskey barrel liners with lips for just this purpose.  Aqua-Mart sells one (www.aqua-mart.com).  As for an external filter, most are sized for MUCH bigger ponds.  I've looked through a few of my catalogs, and the best one I could find was at Aqua-Mart.  It's on Page 18 fo their catalog and is the "Bio-Pond Filter" compact version (without UV) for $33.95.   It's item # FMF1.  It's the cheapest filter I could find out of pond and smallest.  With UV it's $121.95 as UV's are a lot of money.  The cost does NOT include a pump.  You can ask them what size pump and what extra tubing you need to buy.  The other two catalogs I looked at didn't hae anything smaller than that or cheaper.  Oh, wait a minute, Drs. Foster and Smith has the same filter as Item # GX-480563 on Page 5 for only $29.99.  Their site is www.DrsFosterSmith.com (1-800-443-1160).
