Question
my fish pond is only 60 gallons. i have a real good filter but i's not working. it's starting to get a little warmer after winter and it is so green and it smells. i have done barley and other things as well as always cleaning the filter.the past 2 years in the winter it was clear, and this is also the first time i used a deicer.. HELP!!!

Answer
It's harder to keep small ponds clean.  I just cleaned out my 50 gallon tub pond yesterday.  It was like a cesspool.  If your filter is not working, the first thing would be to get a new one.  Then, clean the pond out since it's small enough to do that within a few hours.  Add good bacteria once it's set back up.  To control future algae, see my algae page at http://www.fishpondinfo.com/plants/algae2.htm for a bunch of ideas.  Does the pond have plants?  Add lots of plants, get a filter working, move/aerate the water, add good bacteria, and things should improve.  Good luck!
