discoloration of fish

Question
Hi there

We have a small koi that we have had for 2 years.  I noticed that the back
have of him had lost his orange colour and is now white.  I noticed him
because he was staying in a corner by himself and would not eat or swim.  We
have isolated him and treated him with the drops that are given for ick and
also a bit of salt.  Do you have any idea what the problem is and are we
treating him properly.  This is the 3rd day of islation and he doesn't look any
better and stillnot swimming much.
Please help.
Thanks
Diane

Answer
Koi can change color but the fact that it's white, and he's lethargic seems to indicate a problem.  White patches may be fungus or columnaris (a bacteria).  It may have developed over an injury such as being scratched when spawning or chased by a predator or something.  Ick looks like small white dots all over and not patches of white.  I suggest treatment with antibiotics and salt to start.  For example, a tablespoon per 3 gallons of salt, MelaFix (natural antibiotic), and erythromycin antibiotic (such as Maracyn I by Mardel).  Also, see my page at http://www.fishpondinfo.com/fishcare/treat.htm
Pond fish often get beat up and then get infections.  Many times, koi and goldfish have recovered from some pretty bad cases so hopefully, your koi will also get better.  Good luck!
