getting pond ready for cooler weather ahead

Question
I have a pond it is 6 feet wide, 17 feet long and is about 28 inches deep (1st year). What do I need to know to get ready for winter?  Primarily do I leave the pump and waterfall running during the winter. I live in Ohio and it does get cold with freezing weather often in winter months and do I have to worry about the top freezing? Any info would be helpful.

Answer
Hi,
I keep my filtration running all the time but in winter I turn the pump down so that it is a lot slower ,but we don't get the cold and freezing winters that we used to get years ago.I don't know how cold it gets in Ohio but you must keep a part of the surface of your pond clear of ice so that any foul gases from decaying leaves can be dissapated into the air.
you can visit my pond at koi-z-are-us.20m.com
George.
