moving fish to a different size pond

Question
we have 3 large koi fish and gold fish in our pond- when do we need to transfer our koi to a bigger pond?

Answer
Dear Joanne,

Thank you for your e-mail.
For Koi you need to consider that when they are large (adult koi) they need a swimming area that ensures there health and body. So they need quit a lot of space and depth.
In general I say 1 up to 2m?of water for each koi minimal and this with a minimum of 8-10m?for a pond.
This ensures the health and body for koi.
For koi with high growth potential and showkoi you need up to 5 cubic meters (m? for each koi.
The depth is also something to consider.
If you live in an area where winters could be cold, a deep pond with a minimal depth of 1,5 meters is needed. Also a coverage for cold winters are advisable.
For gold fish, if they are in the same pond as the koi, they will do fine in the pond.
As you do not say how large the koi and pond are I can not give exact advice on this.

Hope this helps out!

Kind regards,
Raf
