my dying Croton

Question
I've had my Croton for about 8 yrs and we have had some struggles.  However, we have always pulled through.  I have never repotted my plant although it was beautiful for years. At this time the leaves are falling off, from the bottom up.  Big seamingly healthy leaves are dropping off.  Yet the top of the plant is still beautiful.  The bottom of the plant just seem like sticks of wood.  Does my plant need repotting?  My watering and strong sunlight routine has been on point.  Please help!!  I've read responses for those with similar problems, I also want to know if I can cut the bottom area, allow to root in water, then repot.

Please Help.... I truly love my plant.

Answer
Hi Sloane, I wish I could see it, but it sounds like it is just leggy from age; you have a good handle on proper care for it, so I am certain it is not anything you have done.  The only way to propagate your Croton is by rooting the "top" section (the crown itself), not the bottom section. All you can do at this point is repot it in the hope of stimulating fuller growth; this will give it new soil and allow the roots to expand further. Nick
