ivy growing up the bark of ornamental pear tree

Question
I have three lovely ornamental pear trees about 12 years old.  Last summer some ground ivy started inching up the trunk and grew up the bark of the trunk.  While it looks quite lovely, will it damage the tree or is it harmless?
Thank you kindly for your expertise.

Answer
As long as the ivy is only on the trunk of the tree it will not damage the tree but when it grows into the limbs it will. Depending on the size of the tree this growth may take many years. It is up to you--if you like the ivy let it grow if not cut it now. You can always cut the ivy back when it is beginning to grow into the limbs.
