shallow roots

Question
Hi,
I live in Mechanicsville, Virginia. That is a suburb of Richmond, VA. I think that is zone 7.

I want to plant one or two trees in my back yard. I have about 3/4 of an acre. I was thinking maybe one evergreen and one not.

My question is this. I need something with fairly shallow roots that won't mess up my septic tank buried in the backyard and won't tear up my neighbor's driveway.

Thanks for you help.

Answer
Without details of your back yard it would be hard to advise you of which tree to plant. I suggest you call the Va. Division of Forestry and ask one of their Foresters to come out and help you with this. This is a free service in most states. Here is the conract information for the Forester in your area:

Lisa Krajewski, Forester
Kathleen Ogilvy, Technician
Jeff Darr, Technician
