weeping willow trimming

Question
HI Jim, we planted a new, little weeping willow in our back yard on Mother's Day.  There are tons of new little growths around the base of the trunk.  Should I trim those off?  IF so, what's the best method? Also, what and how often should I be fertilizing it?  Thanks so much for your help!  Becky

Answer
If you are talking about the sprouts attached to the trunk these are called suckers. They can be cut off with hand pruners. Cut them even with the trunk or branch. If you are talking about sprouts on the ground around the tree these are from the root system and just mowing them will stop them from growing.
Fertilize conservatively. Organic fertilizer high in nitrogen works well. You can use Miracle Grow, a 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing the tree directly. Instead, fertilize the tree抯 soil. Spread the fertilizer around the tree but not next to the trunk. Use about 1 lb. per diameter of tree trunk. Do not use fertilizer stakes (spikes).
