Texas Red Oak Tree

Question
I have three Texas Red Oaks...one has the trunk peeling with whitish mushroom looking spores or something clinging to the trunk. The peeling starts at mid-trunk area on the main trunk of the tree only.

Can I spray with something?  The other trees look fine.

Thank you

Answer
Sounds like a decay fungus. The mushrooms are the fruiting part of the fungi. When a tree is wounded a decay fungi can enter the woody cells. Over many many years the decay will spread and begin to hollow out the tree. The living cells of a tree are just under the bark and the fungi does not effect them. So in general a decay fungi will not effect the health of a tree except it the tree later years may weaken the trunk or limbs causing breakage. There is no way to control the decay fungi. Just keep the tree growing healthy and it will be OK. I would fertilize the tree with 10-10-10 fertilizer about once every other year to aid in the health. Use 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good.
