BIG cottonwood tree

Question
I have several of these trees on my property. I just noticed that one of them has a big split / crack in the bark about chest high. The bark is separating from the tree and I looked in and saw bugs, ants, a bee, etc. I also saw the smooth surface of the tree under the bark. Is there anything I can do to help this tree from dying? Thanks as I know it is sick somehow.

Answer
Remove any loose bark and spray the wound with an insecticide called Merit. This will keep wood borers from the wound. Do not use a wound dressing on the wound this will slow the healing process down greatly. Over time the tree will heal over the wound. Check with your local nursery for Merit.
