scrub oak

Question
I am with a large group of church girls attending a camp up by Kolob Reservoir near Zion's Natl. park in Utah.  Part of our being able to use this camp is that we help maintain the area and our assignment is to "spray" the scrub oak in the area to help keep the roads and camp sites clear.  We have no idea what to purchase or what would be the most effective.  (There are already plans in place to cut down tree limbs, etc. that will be taken care of by a chipper).  We are located here in Las Vegas.  Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Answer
I would use Roundup--this is a safe herbicide and will kill any green plant it is sprayed on. The solution is applied to the foliage and will kill the trees. You will be left with dead trunks and these can be chipped or cut later. The Roundup will be transported to the root systems and kill the roots. Beware that if you spray any green plant it will be killed so do not spray anything not wanting to be killed. But in a camp site it maybe best to kill all the vegetation in an area.  All is needed is to wet the leaf surface of the shrubs. You will need a water supply the Roundup and a sprayer. Back pack sprayers can carry 4-5 gallon of solution and hand pump up type sprayer can hold about a gallon. Either can be used. The back pack are more expensive. I hope this answers what you needed.
