pine and spruce needles

Question
I have two pine and one spruce trees in my front yard.  I have trimmed them up from the bottom about 5 feet to allow the sun to hit the ground under them, but still nothing will grow.  My question is: Is it the acid in the pine needles that is causing this?

Answer
It can be a function of acid and lower Ph of the soil as well as  lack of sunlight. There are plants that will grow in a more shady environment (most plants need a good amount of sun light). I would check with your local nursery for plants that will grow well in the shade and low Ph soils. You do not want to change the Ph then you may damage the pines and spruce.
