tulip poplar

Question
I want to plant a tulip tree in a low lying ground where about 5 ft of the base of the tree will not get more than a couple hours of sun per day but the rest of the tree, above 5 ft, will get all day sun.  When it is said that a tree requires full sun, is it enough that the upper part of the tree receives full sun and the base of the tree receives limited amounts of sun?  If you don't think that the tulip tree will survive these conditions, do you recommend another for Ontario zone 5.  I am looking for a fast growing tree to provide shade.  Thanks for your time.

Answer
Two things this tree is a little out of its natural range in Ontario and yes it grows in full sunlight and does not do well under other trees. As far as a suggested replacement I would contact either the University of Toronto Forestry @ [email protected]

OR contact the Ministry of Natural Resources Offices. They should be able to give a list of trees that will grow in the conditions you are talking about. Here is the web link to the Ministry of Natural Resources Offices. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/ContactUs/2ColumnSubPage/STEL02_179002.html
