hydrangea no flowers

Question
I purchased my hydrangea several years ago. It gets bigger each year and the leaves are beautiful, however, no flowers? it is in full eastern sun. what can i do to get it to flower? also when do I prune it. I live in northwestern PA

Answer
Lori,
Hydrangeas are sensitive to cold temperatures as far as flowering goes. The past few winters here in the northeast have had some really cold temperatures which will kill off the flower buds. Try to protect the Hydrangea during the winter by enclosing it in burlap and tar paper. This should stop damage to the flowerbuds.
Another thing that will effect flowering is your choice of fertilizer. If you are using a high nitrogen fertilizer, then all the energy is going to growth and leaf production. Switch to a low nitrogen fertilizer and you should see flowers within 2 years.
Good luck.
