tupidanthus plants

Question
I wanted to know what kind of fertilizer to use and what to do when the leaves gEt like brown from the edge and get crumble

Answer
Hello Iino

I am not very familiar with this tropical plant, but my researches indicate that if this plant is in a container - inside or outside -it needs a balanced liquid fertilizer about once a month during the growing season.

Planted in the ground it needs a mulch applied around the base about 2 inches deep and spreading out to about 2 feet.  The mulch can be well rotten garden compost or leaf mould.

The reason for the browning, crumbly leaves could also depend on whether the plant is indoors or outside.  If it is inside, the problem could be caused by the plant being in an area that gets direct sunlight through glass, which will burn the leaves. A move to a semi-shaded area might solve the problem.  If it is already in a semi-shaded area, make sure that the plant is adequately watered - it needs to be damp, not saturated.

If the plant is outside, it may be caused by a cold, dry wind.  If it is in a container, just move it somewhere a bit more sheltered, if you can. However if the plant is in the ground, unless you want to dig it up and move it somewhere more sheltered, there is not much you can do to prevent the problem.

For the sake of appearance, you could remove the affected leaves without damaging the plant.
