evergreen shrub

Question
My evergreen shrubs have brown, dead, and dried looking foliage on the inside of the bush.  It's like they are "browning out" from the inside to outside.  Is this due to an insect or disease and how do I care for it?  Thank you.

Answer
Howdy Chris, Coach Dave here and I work for The Home Depot in California and I think I can help.
I have many experiences with your question about shrubs browning.  This is troublesome especially when the shrub has reached a size that might not be easily replaced.  Without knowing what type of evergreen you have I can only give you a general answer.

The main reasons a plant dies is because either it had been physically damaged, had a disease or pest, was subject to extreme temperature changes, or just plain died because it was old.
Because evergreen shrubs usually have a very long life we will guess it was an insect or disease.  The 揵rowning?you described was common for a bunch of different types of pests.  This is the time when you have to play detective and get a little dirty.  First, check the leaves for any noticeable strange things like little crawling bugs, little flying bugs, spots, oily residue, or just about anything out of the ordinary.  If you don抰 see anything on the plant, inspect the soil in and around the base of the plant. This is where you might find mold or other creepy crawly things that are out of the ordinary.
The solution for bugs, depending on the type will be an insecticide or miticide. If the reason is a mold issue, there are many types of fungicides available.  To keep the problem from spreading trim the dead branches off.
Let me know what you find. I抦 here to help.

Yours Respectfully,
Coach Dave
