improving rose health

Question
My roses have only bloomed once a year for the past 2 years, even though I prune and regularly fertilize. They get moderate sun and adequate water. any suggestions?

Answer
There are two main reasons a rose only blooms once in a season. The first is that it is a once blooming rose and the other is that there is too much nitrogen in the fertilizer. High nitrogen encourages the rose bush to make growth at the expense of blooming. Roses only bloom when they have the energy as making leaves and canes takes a lot out of them.
If they are modern roses they should bloom more than once so try using a tomato fertilizer on them. Just follow the directions on the package for a mature tomato plant. Tomato fertilizer contains a high amount of potassium and this is what a plant needs lots of to bloom. Give it some now. Then after most of the flowers are over, give it another feeding. Also take off the dead flowers as the rose may think that it has done it's job in reproducing. Roses make flowers to reproduce by hips.
If you have the name of the roses please send them to me and I will tell you what to expect from that particular rose. Hope this helps. Lynnette
