rose feed

Question
Hi :-)
I have been told that dried sea weed are very good for roses.  I have bought a big sack of the stuff, but I don't know how much I shall give each rose. Are you familiar with sea weed fertilizer ?  It is supposed to make the roses stronger and healthier in a different way than other fertilizers do.

Answer
Hi, Arild--seaweed provides organic matter and many trace elements that roses love.  There are a couple of ways to use it, and you can't burn your roses if you happen to use too much.

Depending on how many roses you have, you could spread a handful or two around the bottom of each bush about 6 inches out from the main "trunk", scratch it in lightly, and water well.  Another thing you can do is to take a large clean trash can, fill it with warm water, and steep several handfuls to make a tea--add a few cups of  alfalfa pellets or meal if you like,a few handfuls of epsom salt, and some liquid iron--this makes an excellent tonic. Let it steep for at least 2 days. A cup or two for each bush would be good.

Check out the American Rose Society at www.ars.org for more articles on fertilizing, and the rose forums at GardenWeb.com as well.  If I can be of more help, you can always reach me here!
