knock out rose winter protection

Question
I live in NE Pennsylvania, do my knockoout roses need wrapping  such as burlap in winter for anti freeze protection?  Temps well below zero at times.

Answer
You are sort of sitting in between zone 5 and 6 so that means your roses will need about 6 to 8 inches of compost, soil or any mulch you can get in your area. This will insure the rose in a very nasty winter will only die back to the top of the pile. Knockout roses are rated as hardy in your area which means they don't need a lot of winter protection. Just cutting back even with the rest of the bush, any extra long canes that might be damaged in winter winds, plus your pile of mulch will set your mind at rest. Be sure to place the mulch only after a few really hard frosts have happened.
