Apple worm?

Question
What is a Flathead Apple worm doing on my Double Delight, besides killing it?? I looked at my Rose this AM, and the entire center was dead, down to the main stock. When I touched a stem it broke right off, and out tumbled the worm. White, ripplie, tiny black spot on its head.

Answer
From your description it certainly sounds like a flat headed apple borer that is confused! They mainly only attack trees and shrubs that are weak or dying. Keep in mind that a rose will grow back from 2 inches of a cane. If you cut your rose back even to one inch you have enough time for it to produce a few basal canes. When a rose in my garden isn't doing well, I usually just cut it back to 3 inches and many times it will come back with more basal canes. Of course if it is a weaker growing rose it dies! However Double Delight is a strong grower so should come back for you. Hope this helps.
