killing roses

Question
Hello, I have plenty of old (big & small)roses in my yard I need to remove. How do I kill them to make it easier to remove them from my garden as at the moment I cannot dig them out.
Thank you

Answer
You didn't mention where you garden, but the best time to make sure you will kill the rose roots, is when they are in active growth. The particular roots you are having a problem with are the under stock on which the top rose is grafted onto. This under stock is VERY vigorous and so gives the top rose a better chance at surviving. There is a product called RoundUp and it comes in different strengths and the  one you want is for shrubs. Make sure you wait until the rose has a few leaves, then use a paintbrush and stroke the chemical on it. There has to be at least 48 hours of no rain. This will take the chemical down to the roots. Because RoundUp becomes just carbon when it hits the soil,  you can go head and plant where you have used this chemical. It does come in a spray bottle but that is usually for plants such as dandelions and other green weeds. You should be able to buy it in a bottle and dilute it to the strength you want. I prefer a paintbrush because you then can get all the canes, spraying it on is okay too but if there is any wind at all, it could kill plants nearby. Be prepared that some of the roots could come back again but keep painting. Hope this helps.
