Roses in the heat

Question
Our 42 established roses are wilting in the current San Diego heat wave.
Yes, I water them deeply every two days. If they wilt during the current 100
degree F. days, should they be additionally.  My gut reaction is that thy have
closed down and will recover overnight.

Answer
Roses really don't like high heat and will go under stress. This mean for them to save themselves, they have to shut down. First the flowers go, then the leaves and finally the canes die-back. Watering deeply is good but don't overdo it as the roses will be unable to take up lots of water when under stress. Washing the whole rose bush down is a good idea even though the rose books say it isn't. The leaves can take up the water and this will help them not go crispy.
