Colour Change, neem oil

Question
i have had my Gentle Giant for almost a year now. From time to time she is a magenta pink to a light pink.It seems that she more light pink towards the ending or the begging of a season. Why does she change color? Also i use Neem oil to control the afids and the mold. Lately she has been budding but the buds look like the tips are burnt or shrival look to them. Can it be the neem oil or does she need more nutirance?

Answer
It is not unusual for a rose to change colour during the growing season. Two people can buy the same rose from the same nursery and it will be different in both gardens. Soil and weather conditions are the main reasons the colour shades are changing. Roses that have two colours in them such as orange and amber with even change to a rose coloured orange. A rose starts out as a certain colour and then as it ages it becomes a slightly different shade and finally when it is just about over, can be unattractive shade. Neem oil won't do anything to the colour of your rose.
Your description of the buds tells me you have rose midges. These tiny winged insects lay their eggs in the flower buds and when they hatch in the spring they eat the flowers which damages them and causes the tip growth to be stunted and the edges to die and go brown.  Take off the deformed buds and put them in the garbage as they will have the eggs of the rose midge in them. I have heard gardeners give good reports on Bayer's Advanced Garden and Rose Insect Killer. Just follow the directions on the package.
