Question -
hello
i started some sunflowers from seed and when they seemed ready, i transplanted them to the garden - where they got all eaten up!
i put slug bait around them but they still seemed to get eaten.
shud i wait til they are bigger? or is it something other than slugs?
suggestions?
thanks

It may not be slugs.....The "Rolly-Poly" this year has been VERY bad.  They eat everything in site-especially the fresh greens! You have to spray or use a dusting insecticide to rid your garden of them.  It probably would not have helped if you waited longer.
When I transplant to the outdoors, I put about 5 layers of newspaper under the plant to protect it.  It's good compost also!

thanks for reply.
i've never heard of 'rolly-poly'?
what do you suggest to spray or dust with?
how does newspaper help?

Answer
Any kind of insecticide is find to use.  The newspaper is a temporary barrier between the ground (and bugs) and the plant.

Rolly-Polys are little oval shapes dark gray to black bugs that you will see if you lift up any container in a garden area.  They roll up in the sun.
