daylily not blooming (hermerocallis, Fregrat Treasure)

Question
I have four Hemerocallis "fragrant Treasure" daylily that are plant along my driveway. For the first few years they were beautiful with tons of blooming flowers but for the past couple of years they have barely bloomed at all and if the do they will bloom in the middle of the green leaves close to the ground. They have continued get the same care now that they had when they we newly planted but we do not get the same results as far as blooms.

Are they past the life span? Just so you know the green leaf part is the flower stands about 2 feet tall and they are about 3 feet wide and as of today I do not see any flowers buds getting ready to come out. I know that they bloom from June through October but should we not expect to see the beginning of some blooms coming up towards the top of the flower?

Thank you.
Any information would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi John,
Thanx for your question.  One of the main reasons daylilies slow down and/or stop blooming is overcrowding.  They multiply rapidly.  You should dig up and separate your rhizomes every three years to rejuvenate the bed and prevent disease.  You can give away, sell or compost the extra plants.  Another thing to consider is have trees or shrubs grown to such a point that they are shading the daylilies?  Too much shade will decrease flowering also.  Are lawn chemicals leaching into the flower bed?  Lawn fertilizers are heavy on the nitrogen side and will cause all green growth at the expense of flowering.  I hope this helps.
Tom
