perennial crysanthemums

Question
Have a great perennial 'mum (not all are perennial, right?)  It is mature at about 18" and has a beautiful white star-burst type flower.  It always has buds early--now--and I have traditionally cut them back all summer so they will bloom in fall.  I have been considering allowing it to bloom now, then severely cutting it back, in hope that it will bloom again in the fall.

Is that wishful thinking?  Two seasons of bloom? Do you think it will work, or do I have to decide in which season I'd like my blooms?

I was told about this site by a friend and think it's great idea and service!

Am looking forward to our answer.

Janet

Answer
Hi Janet,
Thanx for your question.  If you want to let your plant bloom now, you should deadhead it after each blooming period.  After blooming you'll need to trim back to about 6 inches and then keep pinching back until about July 4th and you should get a second blooming in the fall.  Don't let these plants bloom too long in the initial blooming.  Also, chrysanthemums are heavy feeders so be sure to side dress them with plenty of well-composted manure.  I hope this helps.
Tom
