mealybugs

Question
I just found mealybugs on my orchid.  Should I repot?  Take them off as I find them?  I still has about 15 flowers and as I understand you should wait until flowers fall to repot.  Please help!

Answer
For now, remove them as you find them. I use a Q-tip soaked in alcohol if there are just a few-- or an insecticidal soap.  You will need to be vigil because they find good hiding places and eggs will be hatching as well. You will need to continoe to spray an/ or remove them every few days for a while.  I like to use Disyston systemic granules as well that can be sprinkled on the surface of the mix and will work their way down with time.  That gets into the actual plant tissues, so any insect feeding on the plant will die.  The drawback is that the granules, while they are on the surface of the mix, will give off a powerful chemical odor for the first couple of weeks. It also takes a  couple of weeks for the Disyston to enter the plant tissue.
