Answer
Orchids are annual bloomers.  Now, the thing to do is keep the plant healthy and happy and putting on new growth.  This involves an annual repotting following flowering (I assume you have a phalaenopsis or moth orchid).  Locate a bag of orchid potting mix (not soil) and unpot your plant.  Wash the roots off carefully and remove any roots that are mushy as these are dead.  You need to know how healthy your plants roots are as it what's beneath the surface of the potting mix that counts the most toward healthy new growth. Healthy roots are firm and will provide the basis for new growth. Do not use water from a water softener.  Repot using the new potting mix. Phalaenopsis orchids prefer growing in an east window, getting morning sun.  If kept healthy, you should see new blooms about this time next year. Phalaenopsis orchids are house plants and don't like the large swings in temperature found with outside growing.

If you have another type of orchid such as a dendrobium, my advice would be a bit different.
