orchid top bent over badly

Question
My wonderful girlfriends Orchid, and in the move the top got bent over all the way to the side, it apears to be changing in color and has only been 3 days, can i save it? i wonder can it be topped and still live? it has several others underneath the top,Can i top it (meaning cut the top off) will the rest of the branches underneath live?

Answer
Ryan, I'll need to guess at some of the missing details in your description so I'll do that and my answer will be based upon that guess.

I'll assume that you are referring to a phalaenopsis orchid and, by the top, you are referring to the flower spike that bears the buds and flowers. If I am right, then, yes, you can cut off the top of the flower spike. If you have branches of the flower spike lower down on the spike, they should be fine if you top it above those branches.

Please feel free to send a followup question with more detail if the orchid is a dendrobium or some other type of orchid-- my answer might be a little different.  If you're uncertain as to the type of orchid, you can go to the American Orchid Society (AOS) web site where they have sketches of the main types of orchids under the topic "culture".
