Is my Phalaenopsis amabilis Orchid dying?

Question
I got my orchid from my boyfriend on valentines day last year. later the
flowers got a few spots on them and eventually dried up and fell off. I didn't
know what to do after that, so i just left it the the way it was. Am i suppose to
cut the stalk down? or just leave it? Also, one of the leaves has turned bright
green, but the other two are still dark green. What does that mean? Is it
dying? Is there any hope for any type of  re-growth from my orchid?

Answer
Jade, it was fine to leave the old flower spike the way it was.  Our main concern should be to focus on what we can't see-- the root condition.  It is not unusual for the lowest leaf on the plant to turn yellow and fall off.  However, you need to repot your plant in fresh orchid potting mix.  When you go to repot the plant by removing it from its pot and rinsing the mix from the roots you are likely to find some mushy roots that are dead and need to be removed prior to repotting.  Keeping your plant's roots healthy at this time is the key to grow a strong plant before it reblooms next spring.
