bugs in my orchids

Question
I'm very concerned about my two orchids. They are by each other and I noticed that one has little white bugs in the soil when it is disturbed. The other has them now too. There are white bugs with legs that move fast. As well as little grub-like white things that move slow. The orchids are next to an azalea that has a couple little black flies (kind of like fruit flies- I'm not sure if this is related.) Please help. My orchids are blooming now and I love them and don't want to loose them! Thank you.

Answer
Jen, I recommend That you use an insecticidal drench on your plants.  It is likely that your potting mix has degraded and formed a perfect environment for these insects to breed.  When they are done flowering, you need to obtain some fresh orchid potting mix.  It should consist of for bark and other ingedients.  Soak it well before use.  When you unpot your plants, wash the old potting mix thoroughly from the roots and remove any "mushy" roots before repoting.  Discard the old potting mix and pot at that and repot in a clean plastic pot with lots of drainage holes.
