Taisuco Firebird

Question
I received this orchid from a friend and have no idea how to care for it.  After it is finished blooming, I understand I should repot it.  Do I need to cut any part of it for it to rebloom?

Answer
Hello Nancy,

What a nice friend to give you a Doritaenopsis Taisuco Firebird orchid.  It is a hybrid between a phalaenopsis and doritis orchid which are in the same orchid family, sort of like cousins.

Care for it much like a phalaenopsis by growing it in bright shade, temperatures between 60F to 85F, humidity above 50% plus some light air movement.  Water when the potting media becomes barely moist and feed it some orchid fertilizer once in a while.

You can repot it once the blooming is finished.  When you do, remove the spent flower spike down near the bottom.  Once you've repotted it, be patient as it will be next year before it will bloom.  Until then, care for it per the above.  It should make a new leaf or two over the next 6 to 7 months, they should be as large or larger than the older leafs, if not, that could indicate there is a problem that needs your attention.  You should see a new spike emerge between the leafs in early to mid winter and it will slowly grow for 2 to 3 months before blooming.

Hope this helped.
