Plants for rooms with no natural light

Question
I work in an office that has no windows and is painted a dark color.  The only light comes from our computers and track lighting.  I'm looking for plants that can survive with no natural light and are available in Canada.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Lorinda,

Based on your description of the available light, I cannot recommend any plants that will survive for more than six months to a year.

Light is the most critical element for a plant's survival. The only light that plants can use are natural light, fluorescent light, and special plant lights. Incandescent and halogen lights produce light in the wrong part of the light spectrum for plants to use.

There are a few low light plants that will hang in there for a while witout usable light until they gradually deteriorate and die. If you are willing to accept that limitation, then I would recommend the following low light plants: Pothos, Aglaonema (Chinese evergreen), Peace lily (Spathiphyllum), Dracaena 'Janet Craig,' and Snake plant.

I am sorry I cannot be more positive, but I do not want to mislead you about the possibilities of plant survival in your office.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
