White Poewder & Yellow Bugs on My AV

Question
Hi Will,
One of my AVs has white(or yellow) powder on only its flowers. And also I noticed that there are very tiny yellow bugs on its flowers and leaves. The new flowers are not getting big enough it is supposed to be. What should I do to solve these problems?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Derya,

AV's are not very resistant to fungal and pest infections because they have been hybrid so many times.

The powder on the leaves is probably a fungus called powdery mildew. You can pinch off the infected leaves and hope no others get the mildew. Or you can use a fungicide that is listed specifically for powdery mildew and says that it is safe to use on AV's. You have to read the fine print on the label to determine this.

The yellow bugs are probably aphids or they could be mealy bugs. Fill a large bowl with soapy water. Turn the AV upside down, hold it in place, and swirl the plant around in the soapy water for about 30 seconds. That should do the trick, but a repeat treatment in a week might be a good idea.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
