How to care for an EROMELIAD

Question
We were given an eromeliad and it did not have a care insert with this.

I need to know how to properly care for this plant.

Thank you

Len Moon

Answer
Hi Len Moon
I am assuming that you mean a 'bromeliad' or 'bromelliad'.  It looks a bit like a pineapple top and has a flower growing out of the center.
Bromeliads are wonderful plants, one of my favorites. They come in several different species with so many different types of flowers.  The flowers last quite a while.  One drawback, they usually only bloom once and when the flower dies off, the main plant usually begins to die off.  It could take six months to a year for the main plant to die off after the blooms does.
The good part though is that the mother leaves behind 'pups'.  Little baby bromeliad plants.  There is usually more than one.  When the pups are about half the size of the mother, you may separate the plants.
Now for care.  Keep the soil slightly moist.  Do not over water as this will cause root rot.  There should be a 'cup' in the center of the plant.  You have to pour water into that cup also.  Fertilize very little.  They have a way to produce their own fertilizer, and if you do, do not use a fish emulsion type.
The bromeliad needs a good, indirect light in order to keep any color it may have.
Len Moon, I hope this has helped you.

Good Luck
Leslie
