Euphorbia tirucalli

Question
Hi!  I have a Euphorbia Tirucalli (pencil cactus) about 5 ft. tall that I am trying to grow indoors.  I've had it about 9 months.  It recently started dropping stems that appear to have dried out where they are attached to the branch & turned brown.  It is in an East window (indirect bright light) and I'm trying not to over water it.  I'm not sure if the problem is pest, lack of light or overwatering.  Do you have any suggestions?  I thank you!
Debbie

Answer
Hi Debbie,

The pencil cactus is a really neat-looking plant.

There are several possible causes of stem drop. The most common would be improper watering. If your pencil cactus is in the same pot that it came in, then it should not need water more than every 2-3 weeks. However, when you do water, it should be thoroughly so the entire rootball is saturated. Of course, it is important that it not be left sitting in water.

A less likely cause is inadequate light. An east window is okay as long as the plant is right in front of it and the window is completely uncovered throughout the daylight hours.

Mealybugs (soft white bits of cottony stuff) and scale (raised brown bumps with sticky residue) can also cause stem drop. Let me know if you think you have either.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
