Christmas Catus

Question
My cactus is about 20 yrs old...and was all intact until recently one root just above the ground appears to have rotted. It might be from getting too much water at once. Anyway, I'm trying to save the branch (it is more than 1 foot long).

Should it be in water or in soil? Or is it a loss? Thanks !

Answer
Barbara,

I would cut of 2-3 lower bracts of the broken limb and discard them. Then dip the cut end in rooting hormone, available at any garden center and insert it in a fresh pot of soil. Be very careful not to overwater this plant or the original. Overwatering kills more plants than any other cause. Good luck.
